HCMUS INVENTION FOR 3D MEDICAL IMAGE ANNOTATION GRANTED EUROPEAN PATENT /hcmus-invention-for-3d-medical-image-annotation-granted-european-patent/ /hcmus-invention-for-3d-medical-image-annotation-granted-european-patent/#respond Wed, 29 Jul 2026 03:37:10 +0000 /?p=25172

The European Patent Office (EPO) has granted European Patent No. 4432220 for the invention Annotation of Slice Images in Volumetric Medical Images, developed by a research team from VNUHCM鈥揢niversity of Science (HCMUS). The patent was officially published in the European Patent Bulletin on 8 July 2026. The achievement recognises the research capability, technological innovation, and international intellectual property protection efforts of Vietnamese scientists in the field of artificial intelligence for medical applications.

The inventors are Dr L锚 Kh谩nh Duy, Lecturer at the Faculty of Information Technology; Assoc. Prof. Tr岷 Minh Tri岷縯, Vice President; Nguy峄卬 H峄 Th膬ng Long, alumnus of the Talented Bachelor Programme (Cohort 2018) and researcher at the Software Technology Laboratory (currently a doctoral researcher at Dublin City University, Ireland); and Ph岷 Minh Kh么i, alumnus of the Talented Bachelor Programme (Cohort 2018) (currently a doctoral researcher at Dublin City University, Ireland).

In medical diagnosis, CT and MRI scans are commonly stored as hundreds of individual image slices. To create training datasets for artificial intelligence, specialists must annotate anatomical structures or tumours accurately on every slice. Such work is highly time-consuming, repetitive, and susceptible to inconsistencies between adjacent slices. The process therefore requires considerable effort while maintaining a very high level of precision.

The invention Annotation of Slice Images in Volumetric Medical Images introduces a method for assisting the automatic annotation of 3D medical images by exploiting the spatial relationships between consecutive image slices. Once a user creates or edits an annotation on one slice, a machine learning model predicts and propagates the annotation to neighbouring slices, eliminating the need to repeat the same task manually for every individual image.

A key innovation lies in the ability of the model to analyse not only the content of each image independently but also the visual characteristics of the target structure together with the relative positions of adjacent slices in order to predict the shape of the object throughout the complete 3D volume. As a result, annotations remain more continuous and accurate than approaches that process each slice separately. The system also assigns a confidence score to every annotation, enabling users to identify quickly which slices require further review or refinement. When an annotation is corrected, the system updates and propagates the revised information across other slices, thereby maintaining consistency throughout the dataset. Such capabilities substantially reduce the time and effort required for annotating 3D medical images while producing training data with greater consistency and quality for the development of artificial intelligence systems supporting medical image analysis and diagnosis.

The process of securing a European patent took approximately three years and involved several rounds of examination with specialists from the European Patent Office. According to Dr L锚 Kh谩nh Duy, the greatest challenge was demonstrating novelty and inventive step in accordance with European patentability requirements. The research team developed a new interactive approach between users and medical images, enabling faster and more efficient medical data annotation than existing solutions. To satisfy patent examination standards, however, the interaction mechanism had to be formulated as a clearly defined technical solution that fulfilled the requirements of the European patent system. Previous experience gained by Dr L锚 Kh谩nh Duy while working with human鈥揷omputer interaction research groups at technology companies in Europe also proved valuable in addressing technical issues and supporting the patent prosecution process.

A notable aspect of the achievement is that the invention was conceived and filed independently by Vietnamese researchers at a time when, in 2023, international patent filing support programmes remained limited. The research team explained that pursuing patent protection at an early stage reflected a determination to safeguard an idea with strong practical potential, together with continuous encouragement and support from Assoc. Prof. Tr岷 Minh Tri岷縯 throughout the development process.

Beyond intellectual property protection, the patent application process also enabled the research team to gain valuable experience in intellectual property law, international patent examination procedures, and the preparation of technical patent documentation. According to the researchers, such experience will benefit scientists seeking to transform research outcomes into intellectual assets eligible for international patent protection.

Dr L锚 Kh谩nh Duy also emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary research in achieving patentable outcomes. When a core technological solution is developed within a clearly defined application context, the technical value, practical potential, and overall strength of the invention can be demonstrated more convincingly during patent examination.

Following this achievement, the research team continues to pursue projects in virtual reality and augmented reality, with potential applications in physical rehabilitation training and other simulated environments. Further developments are expected to lead to additional patent applications in the future.

The granting of a European patent for Annotation of Slice Images in Volumetric Medical Images represents a significant milestone for research, innovation, and intellectual property activities at VNUHCM鈥揢niversity of Science. The achievement demonstrates that university research can extend beyond scholarly publication to become internationally protected technological solutions, bringing Vietnamese knowledge and research capability closer to the global scientific and technological community.

[OUTSTANDING ROLE MODELS] EXCEPTIONAL GRADUATE: FROM A PASSION FOR MATHEMATICS TO A FULLY FUNDED DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP AT NUS /exceptional-graduate-from-a-passion-for-mathematics-to-a-fully-funded-doctoral-scholarship-at-nus/ /exceptional-graduate-from-a-passion-for-mathematics-to-a-fully-funded-doctoral-scholarship-at-nus/#respond Tue, 28 Jul 2026 04:06:02 +0000 /?p=25178

Graduating with distinction in Mathematics and an outstanding cumulative GPA of 9.57/10, 膼脿o Tr峄峮g To脿n concludes four years at VNUHCM鈥揢niversity of Science (HCMUS) with an impressive academic record. Yet, when asked how he would introduce himself without referring to grades or awards, To脿n does not begin with numbers. Instead, he describes a journey shaped by a lifelong fascination with the question “why”鈥攁 curiosity that has taken him from a love of Mathematics at secondary school to the doctoral research journey he is about to begin.

Pursuing answers to the question “why”

“I would describe myself as someone who has always been fascinated by the question ‘why’. From simple mathematical problems at school to abstract concepts such as hyperbolic spaces and geometric groups, what truly interests me is not finding the answer, but understanding why something is true.” For To脿n, four years at university marked a transition from studying to solve problems to studying in pursuit of knowledge. Every lecturer, every friend, every opportunity to undertake research and every academic paper he encountered contributed to a growing realisation that Mathematics is not simply an academic discipline, but also a way of thinking about and understanding the world.

That passion first emerged during secondary school, when To脿n joined the Mathematics team for gifted students and had the opportunity to learn from experienced teachers and specialists. More than problem-solving techniques, what stayed with him was the way those teachers revealed the broader intellectual landscape behind competition mathematics. From that point onwards, To脿n came to see Mathematics as an academic discipline rather than simply another school subject. When the time came to choose a degree programme, he enrolled in Mathematics at HCMUS, believing the University would provide an ideal environment in which to pursue his academic aspirations.

While many perceive Mathematics as an abstract discipline characterised by formulae and complex proofs, To脿n sees a distinctive beauty within the subject. For him, that beauty lies in logical reasoning and the elegant connections between concepts and ideas that may at first appear entirely unrelated. “Some theorems require only a few lines of proof, yet they connect many different ideas together. The result is a remarkable sense that every piece fits perfectly together.”

That sense of intellectual satisfaction has meant that To脿n has never regarded learning Mathematics as an exercise in memorisation. Rather than committing formulae to memory, he has always sought to understand each concept in depth and explore the relationships between ideas, gradually building an interconnected understanding of the subject. According to To脿n, a sound grasp of fundamental principles makes unfamiliar problems far easier to approach than relying on isolated pieces of knowledge. Such an approach has also helped him develop the habit of asking questions, examining arguments critically and exploring multiple ways of tackling the same problem.

膼脿o Tr峄峮g To脿n (wearing a turquoise shirt) receiving a Certificate of Merit from the HCMUS President for winning First Prize in Algebra at the 2023 National Mathematics Olympiad for Students.

Among his most memorable undergraduate experiences, an exchange semester at the National University of Singapore (NUS) through the DiscoverNUS scholarship programme stands out as a significant milestone. To脿n admits that the first few weeks were far from easy as he adjusted to studying in English and adapted to an academically demanding environment.

“NUS is one of Asia’s leading universities, so I expected the workload to be demanding. Even so, I was still surprised by how capable and hardworking the students were.” What impressed him most was not only the academic ability of fellow students, but also the extensive learning resources and the dedicated support provided by professors and teaching assistants, which encouraged independent learning. To keep pace with the curriculum, To脿n devoted more time to self-study, actively discussed coursework with classmates and gradually adapted to his new surroundings. Those efforts enabled him to complete the semester with a perfect GPA of 5.0/5.0.

Continuing a research journey while sharing a passion for Mathematics

Alongside his formal studies, To脿n became involved in research from the early years of his undergraduate programme. Under the supervision of Professor Mai Ho脿ng Bi锚n, he conducted research in algebra and participated in the 水果派AV解说 Polymath REU project, focusing on hyperbolic geometry. His research was presented at the DAHITO Conference, the VIASM Polymath Workshop and the HCMUS Scientific Conference. During his first year, he also won First Prize in Algebra and Second Prize in Analysis at the National Mathematics Olympiad for University and Secondary School Students.

As he gained experience, To脿n became involved in organising and teaching programmes for school students with a passion for Mathematics, including G岷穚 g峄 To谩n h峄峜, IGO and Tr岷 nghi峄噈 VMO. According to To脿n, these activities not only strengthened his presentation and organisational skills, but also reinforced an important realisation: “Sharing knowledge is also a way of learning more effectively.”

Throughout his undergraduate journey, To脿n speaks with particular gratitude about Professor Mai Ho脿ng Bi锚n, who supported him from his first year through to graduation. Beyond providing academic guidance, Professor Mai Ho脿ng Bi锚n also helped him develop the habit of asking meaningful questions and cultivate the mindset and working practices of a researcher. Opportunities to learn from lecturers and researchers through seminars and collaborative research activities in 水果派AV解说 and overseas further broadened his understanding of contemporary Mathematics and the long-term academic career he hopes to pursue.

Upon graduating, To脿n says that academic achievements were not the first thing that came to mind. Instead, he felt profound gratitude towards his family, friends and lecturers who had supported him throughout his university years.

“I feel deeply grateful and would like to express my sincere thanks to my family, my friends and the lecturers who believed in me and devoted so much time to supporting me.” He also expressed his appreciation to HCMUS and 水果派AV解说 National University Ho Chi Minh City for providing a vibrant academic environment that offered numerous opportunities to learn, grow and challenge himself.

Reflecting on four years at university, To脿n believes that the most valuable lesson has little to do with grades. “For me, the most valuable thing I have gained is the ability to learn independently and the perseverance to tackle difficult problems.”

University life, he says, taught him that no one can teach another person everything. Meaningful progress depends on reading independently, seeking out resources, asking questions and accepting that some problems require considerable time before genuine understanding emerges. He believes that capacity for independent learning will remain invaluable throughout his doctoral studies and in whatever path he chooses in the future.

膼脿o Tr峄峮g To脿n receiving the scholarship under the National Key Program for Mathematics Development for the 2021鈥2030 period.

In August 2026, 膼脿o Tr峄峮g To脿n will continue his academic journey by commencing doctoral studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS) under a fully funded doctoral scholarship. He plans to pursue advanced research in group theory, geometry and dynamical systems鈥攆ields he first encountered during his undergraduate studies and now hopes to explore in greater depth through his doctoral research.

Offering advice to prospective students preparing to study Mathematics, To脿n chooses not to emphasise awards or natural ability. Instead, he highlights perseverance and a genuine enthusiasm for learning. “Don’t be discouraged if you don’t understand a concept or a problem straight away. Almost everyone who studies Mathematics has experienced that feeling. Mathematics does not require you to be the smartest person in the room. Rather, success depends upon perseverance, curiosity and a willingness to keep learning. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, find friends who share your interests, and make full use of every opportunity to learn from your lecturers.”

GROUND-PENETRATING RADAR SUPPORTS THE ONGOING SEARCH FOR THE REMAINS OF FALLEN SOLDIERS /ground-penetrating-radar-supports-the-ongoing-search-for-the-remains-of-fallen-soldiers/ /ground-penetrating-radar-supports-the-ongoing-search-for-the-remains-of-fallen-soldiers/#respond Mon, 27 Jul 2026 03:49:27 +0000 /?p=25139
HCMUS researchers combining electrical resistivity surveying with ground-penetrating radar to improve the reliability of survey results.

Nearly six decades have passed. Many traces of war have been obscured by time and changing landscapes, yet the search for those who gave their lives in service of the nation has never ceased. Through ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and advanced geophysical methods, researchers from VNUHCM鈥揢niversity of Science (HCMUS) are contributing scientific evidence to support the search for and recovery of the remains of fallen soldiers, demonstrating how present-day scientific knowledge can honour history through gratitude, responsibility and professional dedication.

Since June, a team of specialists from HCMUS has worked alongside relevant authorities to conduct surveys across three areas within Le Thi Rieng Park, Ho Chi Minh City, covering a total area of approximately 2,500 square metres. Survey locations were identified through historical records, eyewitness accounts and findings from previous studies.

At each site, researchers employed both ground-penetrating radar and electrical resistivity surveying to investigate areas requiring further examination and verification. Geophysical data collected in the field were subsequently processed using specialised algorithms to reduce signal noise, generate geological cross-sections, produce anomaly maps and construct three-dimensional subsurface models. Analysis of these datasets enables the research team to identify locations displaying characteristics that differ from surrounding geological conditions. Such findings provide valuable scientific evidence for delineating priority areas, cross-checking historical information and recommending locations for further field investigation.

According to Assoc. Prof. L锚 V膬n Anh C瓢峄漬g, Head of the Department of Geophysics, Faculty of Physics and Engineering Physics, HCMUS, ground-penetrating radar operates by transmitting electromagnetic waves into the ground and analysing wave propagation, reflection and scattering as signals encounter materials with different dielectric properties. During field surveys, the system continuously emits electromagnetic pulses beneath the surface and records reflected signals from geological layers or anomalous subsurface objects. Careful processing of these reflected signals enables specialists to identify variations in geological structures and determine the locations of features requiring further investigation.

The research team analysing geophysical data and evaluating anomalous areas to support survey planning and site delineation.

Assoc. Prof. L锚 V膬n Anh C瓢峄漬g explained that, in the search for the remains of fallen soldiers, ground-penetrating radar does not directly detect human remains. Instead, the technology identifies traces associated with historical burials. Such indicators may include disturbed soil resulting from excavation and backfilling, disrupted geological boundaries, metallic objects such as canteens, firearms, ammunition casings or personal belongings buried alongside the deceased. Long-term changes in soil structure and gradual ground subsidence may also produce electromagnetic anomalies that can be detected by radar. Once processed and analysed, these anomalies help identify locations that should be prioritised for field verification.

Compared with large-scale exploratory excavation, the use of ground-penetrating radar enables authorities to narrow search areas before excavation begins, significantly reducing time, labour and cost. In many cases, preliminary analysis of field data can also be completed on site, supporting initial decision-making. According to Assoc. Prof. L锚 V膬n Anh C瓢峄漬g, however, locating mass burial sites created almost 60 years ago presents considerable challenges. Urban development, land reclamation and changes to terrain have left many targets buried much deeper than the original ground surface. Decades of burial have also caused physical traces to weather gradually and merge with surrounding geological materials, reducing the strength of reflected electromagnetic signals. For that reason, successful investigations depend upon the integration of advanced technology, specialist expertise and reliable historical evidence.

Assoc. Prof. L锚 V膬n Anh C瓢峄漬g emphasised that recommendations for site delineation or excavation are never based solely on radar data. Survey findings must be examined alongside historical maps, archival records, eyewitness testimony and results from complementary investigations. Only locations supported by multiple lines of evidence are prioritised for field verification or archaeological excavation. Alongside ground-penetrating radar, the research team continues to integrate additional geophysical techniques, including electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), electromagnetic sensing, shallow seismic surveys, three-dimensional mapping, unmanned aerial vehicles and artificial intelligence to improve confidence in survey findings.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is deployed to collect geophysical data supporting the delineation of priority locations for further field investigation.

Survey work conducted at Le Thi Rieng Park represents the latest stage in a series of initiatives undertaken by HCMUS to apply geophysical technologies to the search for and recovery of the remains of fallen soldiers. Under Official Dispatch No. 5144/VPCP-KGVX issued by the Government Office, 水果派AV解说 National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) and VNUHCM鈥揢niversity of Science (HCMUS) were tasked with mobilising specialist researchers and advanced equipment to support survey, search and recovery operations across southern 水果派AV解说 through July 2027. The first operation was carried out in Quang Ngai Province, along Truong Chinh Street, where historical evidence suggests the presence of mass burial sites containing the remains of approximately 70鈥90 soldiers who lost their lives during the 1968 Tet Offensive.

The continued application of advanced geophysical technologies to the search for the remains of fallen soldiers demonstrates the research capability and technology transfer capacity of scientists at HCMUS. More broadly, such work illustrates how science and technology in 水果派AV解说 are making increasingly meaningful contributions to missions of profound historical significance and humanitarian value.

[VNUHCM S&T PROJECT EVALUATION] NATURAL RADIOACTIVITY DISTRIBUTION COEFFICIENTS IN SOIL AND WATER ENVIRONMENTS /vnuhcm-st-project-evaluation-natural-radioactivity-distribution-coefficients-in-soil-and-water-environments/ /vnuhcm-st-project-evaluation-natural-radioactivity-distribution-coefficients-in-soil-and-water-environments/#respond Sat, 25 Jul 2026 08:06:21 +0000 /?p=25192

On 24 July, the Evaluation Council for a VNUHCM-level research project held an evaluation session for the project titled 鈥淩esearch on Natural Radioactivity Distribution Coefficients in Soil and Water Environments and Application to Predict Changes in Natural Radioactive Background in Soils and Several Freshwater Lakes in 水果派AV解说鈥, led by Assoc. Prof. L锚 C么ng H岷.

The project aims to determine distribution coefficients of naturally occurring radionuclides in soil and water environments in 水果派AV解说, while applying these coefficients to models for predicting changes in natural radioactive background in soils and several freshwater lakes. According to the acceptance report, the research team established a database on the distribution of naturally occurring radionuclides in soil and water environments through surveys of 12 soil鈥損lant systems, 79 water sampling locations and 20 sediment sampling locations. Based on these findings, the team determined solid鈥搇iquid distribution coefficients (Kd), soil鈥損lant transfer factors (TF), suspended solids鈥搘ater distribution coefficients (K鈧泈), and radon emanation coefficients (F鈧涒倯d, F鈧愨倻鈧) under environmental conditions in 水果派AV解说.

Dr Nguy峄卬 V膬n Th岷痭g, representing the research team, presenting the project before the Evaluation Council.

The collected data were integrated into semi-empirical models, the Rn-222 equilibrium model and the QWASI model to predict groundwater convection rates, variations in radioactive background levels in soils, and Ra-226 concentrations in water from quarry lakes. The project also conducted quantitative assessments of radiation exposure doses related to crops, water resources and public health, contributing scientific foundations for environmental monitoring, radiation safety assessment and resource management in 水果派AV解说.

According to the research team, one of the project鈥檚 notable outcomes is the establishment of a soil鈥損lant transfer factor (TF) dataset based on experimental data collected under 水果派AV解说鈥檚 environmental conditions. The dataset contributes additional information on radionuclide transfer processes in tropical environments and can support further studies on radiation dose assessment, radioactive transport modelling and environmental management.

Assoc. Prof. L锚 C么ng H岷 providing explanations and clarifying several aspects of the project before the Evaluation Council.

Regarding scientific outputs, the project published one Q1 international journal article, three Q2 journal articles and one Q3 journal article; successfully trained one doctoral researcher and one master鈥檚 student; and delivered numerous presentations at domestic and international scientific conferences and workshops. According to the acceptance report, the project fulfilled its registered objectives and exceeded targets in several areas, including training, scientific publications and research outputs. The Evaluation Council unanimously agreed to accept the project, confirming that all registered objectives had been achieved and the project met the required standards.
