On the morning of 8 April, the Spring School on Statistics and Machine Learning 2025 officially commenced at VNUHCM-University of Science. This intensive international academic programme is co-organised by the University in collaboration with the ˮ����AV��˵ Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), under the framework of the National Key Programme for the Development of Mathematics for the period 2021–2030. Featuring lectures by international experts from two renowned French institutions—the University of Toulouse and the University of Paris-Saclay & ENSIIE—the programme marks a significant milestone in the University’s strategy for the internationalisation of education, promoting academic cooperation and the development of high-quality human resources in applied data science in ˮ����AV��˵.

Over 300 Applicants – 100 Outstanding Participants

From nearly 300 applications submitted by students from more than 20 universities nationwide, 100 outstanding participants have been selected for the Spring School 2025. During the two-week programme (8–19 April), they will attend a structured curriculum comprising both foundational and advanced lectures. The first week focuses on fundamental knowledge in statistics and machine learning, while the second week offers specialised topics in either theoretical or applied directions.

Distinguished International Academics from French Universities

The programme features direct instruction by distinguished academics from two leading French institutions. Professor Mathilde Mougeot represents the University of Paris-Saclay & ENSIIE. From the University of Toulouse, Associate Professors François Chapon, Juliette Chevallier, and Agnès Lagnoux contribute their expertise. All are highly experienced researchers in machine learning, statistics, and applied probability.

Towards a Regular Model of International Academic Collaboration

In his opening remarks, Associate Professor Trần Minh Triết, Vice President of the University and Head of the Organising Committee, emphasised that the Spring School is part of a long-term collaboration with VIASM to fulfil the goals of the National Programme for Mathematics. This year’s event strengthens ties with international partners from France, such as the University of Toulouse and the University of Paris-Saclay & ENSIIE, with a vision to develop applied data science and statistics in ˮ����AV��˵.

“We expect the Spring School to become an annual academic event, expanding ˮ����AV��˵–France cooperation and offering Vietnamese students opportunities to pursue international doctoral programmes.”

Over a Decade of ˮ����AV��˵–France Cooperation in Statistics and Machine Learning

Dr Nguyễn Thị Mộng Ngọc, Lecturer in the Department of Probability and Statistics, Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, shared insights into the long-standing collaboration. The University of Science previously hosted the 2014 Summer School with lecturers from French universities such as the University of Toulouse and the University of Bordeaux. Since then, intensive courses have been organised biennially, contributing to a sustainable academic partnership.

After disruptions due to COVID-19, the collaboration resumed in 2023 with the course “Sampling Design and Statistical Process Control.” The 2025 programme has expanded its scale to the national level.

During a working visit to Toulouse (France) in March 2024, Dr Ngọc represented the University and reached an agreement with French partners to institutionalise the Spring School as a recurring collaborative initiative, marking more than a decade of joint efforts and aiming for long-term development.

The Spring School 2025 is not only an in-depth academic event but also a clear testament to the University of Science’s strategic commitment to the internationalisation of education and research activities.
