A. Deokiesingh, Lecturer at the Centre for English Language Communication, National University of Singapore (NUS). The seminar introduced practical perspectives on academic communication and language development within international educational contexts.

As higher education becomes increasingly internationalised, academic communication skills in English are emerging as an essential requirement for students, not only in learning activities but also in research, collaboration, and international engagement. Alongside linguistic competence, students are expected to cultivate confidence, presentation skills, and professional communication styles suited to multicultural environments.

During the seminar, Dr Jenson J. A. Deokiesingh examined common challenges encountered by students when communicating and delivering presentations in English, including pressure related to pronunciation, fluency, fear of making mistakes, and concerns about judgement within international settings. According to Dr Deokiesingh, one of the greatest barriers to academic communication does not arise solely from language proficiency, but from a lack of confidence and hesitation in expressing personal viewpoints.

The research, titled 鈥淭he prevalence of antibiotic resistance and characteristics of colistin resistance in enteric bacteria isolated from faecal samples of paediatric patients with diarrhoea in Southern 水果派AV解说鈥, was supervised by Associate Professor Phan Th峄 Ph瓢峄g Trang and Dr Ho脿ng Ho脿i Ph瓢啤ng.

Antimicrobial resistance represents one of the pre-eminent challenges to global public health, particularly regarding the clinical management of infections caused by multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Consequently, colistin鈥攁 polymyxin antibiotic鈥攕erves as a treatment of last resort for numerous severe infections. Nevertheless, the emergence and dissemination of colistin resistance genes within the mcr family pose significant hurdles to therapeutic efficacy.

Driven by these clinical realities, the thesis investigates the status of antibiotic resistance and the specific mechanisms of colistin resistance in enteric bacteria isolated from paediatric patients aged five and under suffering from diarrhoea in Southern 水果派AV解说. The study involved isolating Enterobacteriaceae strains, performing antibiotic susceptibility testing, determining minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for colistin, and identifying mcr genes via PCR techniques.

The findings indicate variations in colistin resistance rates across different groups of enteric bacteria, with E. coli and Klebsiella spp. exhibiting the highest prevalence. Furthermore, the research identified mcr-1, mcr-8, and mcr-9 gene variants within the isolates, providing clarity on the transmission dynamics of colistin resistance genes within microbial populations.

The research, entitled 鈥淚solation, Selection, and Genetic Characterisation of Microorganism Strains from the Mekong Delta Capable of Antagonising Ralstonia solanacearum causing Bacterial Wilt in Cucumbers (Cucumis sativus)鈥, was conducted under the supervision of Associate Professor Phan Th峄 Ph瓢峄g Trang and Dr V玫 膼矛nh Quang.

The research focuses on selecting microbial strains capable of antagonising the bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum. This pathogen causes bacterial wilt in cucumbers, a disease that significantly impacts yields and cultivation efficiency across numerous vegetable-growing regions in the Mekong Delta.

By isolating and screening soil and disease samples collected throughout the Mekong Delta, the study identified several promising microbial strains. Notably, two strains鈥擝acillus velezensis DB2.1 and Streptomyces noursei DS30.6鈥攄emonstrated outstanding antagonistic efficacy within laboratory, greenhouse, and field settings.

Experimental results indicate that the combination of these two microbial strains substantially reduces the incidence of bacterial wilt in cucumber plants while simultaneously enhancing crop productivity. Furthermore, the study performed an analysis of genetic characteristics and functional genes related to the pathogenicity of the bacteria, alongside the antagonistic mechanisms of the selected microbial strains.

According to the findings, the thesis highlights the potential for utilising indigenous microbial strains to develop biological products for sustainable agriculture. Such advancements contribute to reducing the reliance on chemical pesticides in farming practices.

Throughout the doctoral candidacy, doctoral researcher L锚 Thanh B矛nh published six scientific papers, comprising three articles in domestic journals and three international publications indexed in Scopus.

On 8 May, the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology at VNUHCM鈥揢niversity of Science (HCMUS) hosted an academic seminar entitled 鈥楴ext-Generation PCR 鈥 Digital PCR: Principles and Applications鈥.

As molecular biology research increasingly demands superior sensitivity, precision, and quantification capabilities, traditional PCR methods have begun to demonstrate certain limitations in specific advanced applications. The emergence of Digital PCR (dPCR)鈥攔egarded as the third generation of PCR鈥攊s facilitating new approaches through the absolute quantification of nucleic acids without the requirement for standard curves, whilst simultaneously enhancing reliability in analysis and diagnostics.

The programme featured a presentation by Dr B霉i Thu Th峄, Application Specialist at the QIAGEN Singapore Representative Office in Vietnam. The seminar focused on the core principles of Digital PCR (dPCR) technology, which enables the absolute quantification of nucleic acids without standard curves, thereby increasing sensitivity and precision within molecular biology analysis.

During the session, the speaker detailed the mechanism of sample partitioning into thousands of independent micro-reactions to detect and accurately quantify target sequences based on Poisson distribution. Alongside the theoretical framework, the programme provided updates on various practical applications of dPCR in research and diagnostics, including the detection of rare variants, copy number variation (CNV) analysis, viral load quantification, cancer research, cell and gene therapy, as well as food and environmental testing.

On the afternoon of 24 April 2026, VNUHCM鈥揢niversity of Science (HCMUS) hosted a delegation from the National University of Singapore (NUS), one of Asia鈥檚 leading higher education institutions, to discuss and promote future collaboration in academic education and research.

The NUS delegation comprised representatives from several specialised units, including the NUS Graduate School, the Centre for English Language Communication, NUS Enterprise, the NUS Institute of Systems Science, and the School of Continuing and Lifelong Education. The delegation was led by Associate Professor Caroline Lee, Vice Provost (Graduate Education) and Dean of the NUS Graduate School.

Speaking at the meeting, Associate Professor Tr岷 L锚 Quan emphasised the University’s commitment to developing academic programmes aligned with international integration. According to the President, establishing flexible joint models that address practical demands and emerging technological trends will broaden learning and research opportunities for students, particularly within interdisciplinary fields.

Representing NUS, Associate Professor Caroline Lee expressed high regard for the potential of collaboration with HCMUS, whilst sharing the NUS vision for postgraduate development focused on interdisciplinarity, technological integration, and internationalisation. She stated that NUS is prepared to coordinate the implementation of scholarship schemes, joint education programmes, and academic exchanges, aiming to build sustainable and profound collaborative models.

The third focus area includes summer programmes and short-term courses delivered by NUS Enterprise and affiliated units, designed to enhance practical experience, innovation, and global skills for students.

Furthermore, representatives from the Centre for English Language Communication introduced programmes to improve academic English proficiency, providing a necessary foundation for students participating in international schemes. Contributions from the NUS Institute of Systems Science and the School of Continuing and Lifelong Education also opened avenues for collaboration in digital skills education, lifelong learning, and short-term courses tailored to the needs of the contemporary labour market.

The proceedings focused on practical implementation, prioritising collaborative programmes with high feasibility that meet real-world requirements. Consequently, both parties agreed to maintain communication at the departmental level to gradually realise these collaborative initiatives. Particular emphasis will be placed on interdisciplinary sciences, materials science, environment, and biology-biotechnology, whilst increasing integration with information technology, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data science.
